Man held over death of woman and son

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his partner and six-year-old son who were found stabbed to death at their home in Lancashire.

The 41-year-old woman and the child were found by police at a house in Bolton-le-Sands, at 11.40am yesterday.

Police said they were confronted with a “distressing scene” as they entered the property, where the body of the child was found in the front bedroom.

The 34-year-old murder suspect was also at the house in Lowlands Road and had suffered stab wounds.

He was arrested on suspicion of murder and was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital where his condition was described by police as serious.

A cordon remained in place at the scene last night while police officers were working in the area to reassure local residents.

Initial indications show both the woman and boy, who were mother and son, died as a result of injuries consistent with stab wounds.

Home Office post-mortem examination were due to take place last night to establish the exact causes of death.

Detective Superintendent Paul Withers, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are still in the very early stages of this investigation and we have a team of officers and staff working on this investigation.

“This is being treated as a murder inquiry although at this stage I must point out that I am not looking for anybody else in connection with this incident.

“I would ask that if anybody has any information which they believe could assist our investigation then to contact police.

“Incidents like this do send a sense of shock through the community and our neighbourhood policing officers are in the area and I would urge anyone who has any concerns to speak to their local officers who will allay any fears.”
