Man held in Yorkshire over 1985 bank robbery

A MAN has been arrested in Yorkshire in connection with an armed robbery at a bank nearly 25 years ago, police said.

The man, 58, was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the robbery at the then Lloyds bank in Cromford, Derbyshire, on September 18, 1985.

He was questioned by detectives before being released on police bail, Derbyshire Constabulary said in a statement.

During the robbery three men stole 7,000 from the bank. Security guard John Power, 61, suffered serious facial injuries after being hit in the face with the butt of a shotgun.

The robbers fled in a Ford Escort which was later found abandoned in nearby Belper.

The case featured two months later on the BBC's Crimewatch programme but nobody has ever been brought to justice.

Det Chief Insp Sam Slack, from Derbyshire Police, said: "The public can rest assured that if any new information comes to light regarding old cases, whatever they may be, we will re-open the investigation."
