Man hurt in Scarborough kitchen fire

A man had to be rescued by firefighters from his third-floor flat after a fire broke out just before midnight yesterday.

The incident happened on Westborough, Scarborough at 11.30pm - fire crews were called to the scene by a passer-by, who saw smoke coming from a building.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “Three engines were dispatched to the scene, two from Scarborough and one from Filey. The fire started in a pan believed to contain cooking oil and led to the kitchen and flat being badly smoke and fire damaged.

“The man was treated at the scene and taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.”

No-one else is understood to have been involved in the fire.
