Man jailed for fake passport hoard in loft

A MAN was jailed for 12 months after a court heard seven false Irish passports were recovered from his loft.

Gwanro Ali, 25, was also found to have allowed 14,500 to pass through his bank accounts, Michael Greenhalgh prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court.

Ali, of Bruce Gardens, Armley, in Leeds, admitted money laundering and possession of the passports. He said he was told the money was someone trying to escape paying tax.

Sentencing him yesterday Recorder Carl Gumsley said he accepted he was a family man with a good work ethic

"That being said you allowed yourself to effectively become a "safe haven" for the money or articles, in this case passports, of those who wished to commit crime," he said.

He said Ali must have known that the passports would be used illegally.
