Man killed after horse and cart involved in crash

A man has died after the horse and cart he was travelling on was involved in a crash.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, suffered serious injuries when the cart and a small Ford panel van collided at around 7.45pm on Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people, including a man and three children also on the cart, were taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

The man and two boys remain in hospital but the third boy was discharged after being treated for a knee injury.

The van driver, a 45-year-old man from Leeds, suffered minor injuries.

He was arrested in connection with the collision and remains in police custody.

Both vehicles were travelling along the northbound carriageway of the A63 Great North Road, near South Milford Lodge.

The road was closed while investigators examined the scene and was reopened at around 1.30am on Friday.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the small silver van or the horse and cart before the collision or anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.
