Both north and southbound carriageways were closed to allow specialist police to investigate the incident, and a force spokesman said the man had suffered serious injuries but was alive when he was taken from the scene.

Traffic was being diverted away from where the incident took place via junction six to the north and at junction two to the south. The northbound carriageway was expected to open first with the southbound opening later in the evening.

Police have also appealed for witnesses to an accident which happened at around 6pm on Monday night in Carcroft, Doncaster, which left a 59-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

The victim was hit by a silver Vauxhall Signum in Skellow Road. The driver, a 29-year-old man from Hull, was not injured.
