Man questioned over hit and run crash that killed teenager

Callum Hilton, 16, suffered a fatal head injury when he was catapulted 20 feet by the collision in Stand Lane, in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.

Police said the teenager was walking to a party with a cousin and two friends 
when he was struck as they crossed a busy 30mph road shortly before 6.30pm on Saturday.

His cousin was walking slightly ahead so was missed by silver car, which police believe was a Peugeot 206.

The teenager died in hospital, surrounded by family members. Detective Inspector Amber Waywell of Greater Manchester Police said the family was “going through hell”.

“Callum’s mother and grandfather just want to know what happened to him.

“It’s just awful. I can’t imagine what his family, his mother, will be going through.

“A young boy goes out on a Saturday evening and doesn’t come home.

“She must be besides herself with grief and we are trying to support her as best we can.”

The boys, three aged 16 and one aged 18, were all from the Middleton and Heywood areas of Greater Manchester.

Officers said they were crossing the road to ask for directions at a hotel opposite.

DI Waywell added: “It is a busy road, it’s a fast road, it’s a slope.

A man who lives close to the scene described how a neighbour, a nurse, and a passer-by battled to save the boy.

He said: “It was heartbreaking to watch. The lad was in a very, very bad way.

“The frustration of standing there as two people try to save a young kid’s life was heartbreaking.”

A GMP spokesman said: “Shortly after 1.30pm today, a man was arrested in the Radcliffe area of Bury on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.”
