A MAN has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with arson following a fire on board a North Sea ferry which sparked a dramatic emergency rescue off the Yorkshire coast.

Boden George Hughes, of Fulwell Road, Sunderland, was at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with arson as well as affray.

No pleas were entered and the case was committed to Newcastle Crown Court, where he will appear on January 14.

The 26-year-old was remanded in custody.

The fire broke out on the DFDS overnight service to Amsterdam in one of the cabins when it was about 30 miles off the Yorkshire coast.

Six people, including a pregnant passenger, were airlifted off the vessel after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and the ferry was diverted back to North Shields. A 28-year-old man who was detained on suspicion of affray has been released on bail pending further inquires.
