Mansion House to open after meetings move

plans to open Doncaster’s historic Mansion House to the public have been unveiled after councillors moved their meetings to a new £26m headquarters building.

Until the end of last year, the Mansion House was used for council business, but the last full council meeting was held at the venue on December 6.

Built in 1748 by local builder John Thompson, the Mansion House officially opened on April 15, 1749. It is one of just three which remain in the country.

A team of volunteers is now being assembled so that visitors can enjoy guided tours of the building, and there are also plans to hire it out for corporate events.

Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “The Mansion House is one of Doncaster’s most treasured assets. It is a wonderful building, with splendid architecture and fascinating stories.
