Marathon runner's £26,385 target

An East Yorkshire businesswoman has set herself the target of raising more than £26,000 for a charity which helps sufferers of a rare skin disease.

Claire Burcham, from Beverley- based Thrive Coaching, will be running the London Marathon for the first time in April and has set out to raise 26,385 – reflecting that a marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards long. She said: "I decided to take up the challenge of raising 26,385 by finding 26,385 people to donate just 1 each.

"Unfortunately I don't have 26,385 friends so am asking all of my business contacts, friends, relatives and family to spread the word amongst their contacts in the hope that we can reach this amazing and symbolic figure."

The money will got to DebRA, a charity which provides nurses and carers for people affected by epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously.

Ms Burcham felt compelled to help after seeing the TV documentary The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off. Donations can be made online by going to www.justgiving.com/claires26385challenge.
