Marching on together

One hundred soldiers are retracing a 427-mile journey as they march through Yorkshire this week, raising money for Army charities.

The Coldstream Guards are following in the arduous footsteps of their forebears to mark the 350th anniversary of General George Monck and his 6,000 troops marching from Scotland to London. Two of the regiment’s men were killed in Afghanistan last year, where 550 of the Coldstream Guards are currently serving.

Captain Mark Hayhurst said the freezing weather conditions don’t come close to the winter in Afghanistan and urged members of the public to support the squaddies when they make a stop at York Minster tomorrow morning.

“In Newcastle we got a lot of waves and cheers from members of the public, which is exactly what we need after a long day marching,” he said.Picture: Mike Cowling
