Markers put up to help lost walkers

STILE markers have been put up on Kinder Scout, in the Peak District, to try and help those who become lost on the moors.

The markers have been put up on a fence which is currently being erected around the hill, scene of the Mass Trespass, to help with restoration work being carried out by the National Trust.

They give information such as the grid reference of each stile, to make it quicker and easier for help to reach anyone in distress.

Phillip Weiss, Kinder Scout catchment officer, said: “The discs were an idea which came out of the public consultation meetings held during the planning stage of the Kinder Fence line project. It is great to see these going up.”

The five-year restoration project, which started in 2011, will see vast areas of the bare peat landscape restored by gully-blocking, brash spreading and revegetation work.

There are nearly 160 discs to be placed on the stiles along the fence.

Neil Roden from Peak District Mountain Rescue added: “This is a great initiative which will really help the mountain rescue team in the Peak District.

“It will help save lives by alleviating distress and speeding up rescues on Kinder Scout.”
