Market will stay open, promises city council

RUMOURS about the possible closure of Leeds' Kirkgate Market "couldn't be more wrong", Leeds Council said yesterday.

The authority said the market is set for some changes in the next year "none of which include it closing".

Cath Follin, the council's head of the city centre and markets, said: "Recent rumours about the potential closure of Kirkgate market couldn't be more wrong.

"We'd like to reassure traders and shoppers that we are completely committed to Kirkgate and its future.

"The market is a big part of Leeds and its heritage. We are committed to continuing to improve the market and encouraging more and more people to visit and shop there. It is a truly spectacular space and offers such a wide variety of different items.

"We are committed to the market's future, and have no plans to close the market. We are continuing to work with traders to identify ways in which the market can be improved and bring new businesses into the market."

Ongoing initiatives include the addition of business support for all traders at the market, says the council.

The authority has provided 250,000 for traders to tap into, which includes money for grants and business advice.

The recent addition of Wednesday afternoon opening has been put in place after suggestions from market traders.

"The introduction of CCTV and closer working with the police has resulted in a significant reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour at the market and has created a safer more comfortable environment for shoppers and traders alike," said a council spokesman.

"The next 12 months will see an additional 250,000 to be invested in the market and consultations with traders representatives on how it could best be used are on going."

A support group, Friends of Leeds Kirkgate Market, was launched last week following fears for the market's future. Around 200 people attended a public meeting for the launch.
