Masked gang grab safe after beating man

A GRANDFATHER who kept his life savings in a safe at his home in Athersley South, Barnsley, was beaten "black and blue" during a robbery by five masked men.

George Robinson, 59, was tied up, robbed and beaten with an iron bar while his wife Joyce Robinson, 60, was tied up in the next room. He broke free and managed to stab one of the raiders in the leg with a dart before they made off, carrying the safe, in a black Vauxhall Vectra.

The safe contained a "substantial amount" of cash, passports, war medals and a dedication from the Queen presented to Mr Robinson's grandmother, thanking her for taking people in during the war.

The Robinsons have now asked Barnsley Council if they can move from their council house.

South Yorkshire Police are investigating.
