Masked teenagers leave hundreds of windows smashed in Grimsby in 'night of mindless vandalism'

Windows were smashed at the National Fishing Heritage Centre, Grimsby - which was visited by the Duchess of Cambridge in 2013.

The National Fishing Heritage Centre was one of the worst-hit in the rampage in Grimsby, which Humberside Police said targeted cars and businesses at multiple locations.

There are reports that one vehicle attacked and wrecked was a car specially modified for use by a disabled person.

Detective Superintendent Jo Roe said: "I want to reassure people living in Grimsby that last night's incidents were part of a night of mindless vandalism committed by, we think, a small number of individuals.

"The behaviour displayed and the damage caused is wholly unacceptable and I can assure you that we will find those responsible for this.

"The impact this kind of mindless, indiscriminate and, frankly, shameful behaviour has on communities is something we do not and will not put up with."

A police spokesman said officers were first called to reports of youths wearing balaclavas and carrying what were thought to be hammers damaging a trolley park at Sainsbury's in Corporation Road at 9pm on Wednesday.

Further incidents included business and shop windows smashed in and around Victoria Street West and a host of reports of cars being attacked between 11pm on Wednesday and 1am on Thursday at different locations.

The night culminated with more than 50 windows being smashed at the Fishing Heritage Centre and Alexandra Dock Business Centre.

Ms Roe said: "Officers work hard with people living in Grimsby and continue to do so to make the town a good place to live and work - something they deserve.

"Criminal behaviour like this will not go unpunished."

She added: "We want people living there to know that it is business as usual in the town centre and you can come in as usual.

"Our patrol officers and PCSOs will be highly visible while our team of detectives continues to investigate.

"We want anyone - parents, friends or acquaintances - who know who are responsible to get in touch."

Ms Roe said one teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in custody.
