Match off after bomb scare near football ground

A BOMB scare brought traffic chaos to streets close to a Yorkshire football ground.

Council workers carrying out a routine inspection yesterday afternoon of pipes next to the River Don, near Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium, found what was initially feared to be an unexploded Second World War bomb.

Roads were closed and fire crews placed on standby while an Army explosive ordnance disposal team – or the bomb squad – was dispatched to the scene.

An under-21s game between Wednesday and Leeds United at Hillsborough that was due to get under way at 7pm was also called off.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said checks subsequently revealed that the item discovered by the workmen had in fact been “non-explosive”.
