Mayor heralds plan for town’s new market

THE mayor of a Yorkshire town has heralded a major development for a new outdoor market and public square as vital to
the economy amid hopes of
providing a boost of up to 1,000 jobs.

Blueprints for the scheme in Doncaster have gone on show
to the public at the town’s Corn Exchange in the existing market, to glean the views of shoppers and traders.

The authority is investing about £1m in creating the new outdoor market and the project is being financed by
funding from the Government’s Local Economic Growth Initiative which is ring-fenced to spend on economic growth.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “We are creating an entirely revitalised market in Doncaster to assist in the regeneration, as our markets are an important area of our town.

“The markets are vital to the town centre’s economy, providing employment for around 1,000 people, and continuing the regeneration is important for jobs and growth.

“I am hugely supportive of Doncaster’s award-winning markets which are among the best in Britain.”

Proposals for the new market include modern stalls and improved sight lines with a grid system similar to aisles in a supermarket which is aimed at improving access.

The proposed new layout is
also hoped to improve access to the Wool Market and also allow a public square to be created in front of the town’s Corn Exchange.

The new market is set to include paving, new benches and street lighting.

Work to create the new market and square is due to start in spring.

While the project is carried out, the outdoor market will be relocated to the area in front of the Corn Exchange and the Market Top area.

The scheme to develop the new market is due to be completed by the autumn.
