Mayor takes on spitting and swearing

Spitting and swearing on the streets of Doncaster will not be tolerated, and yesterday the town's mayor unveiled signs laying down the rules.

Peter Davies ordered council bosses to have the red and blue signs made up to support one of the pledges he made in his election manifesto. A copy of his signature has been used under the signs.

Mr Davies admitted that, at present, it was not illegal to spit and swear, and said it was still a “hazy area”. But he said he felt he had to “draw a line in the sand” and added: “I am saying here and now what I will and will not tolerate on the streets of Doncaster.

He added: “I am currently looking into a byelaw, because there is an argument that spitting is a form of littering and we are already cracking down hard on that. We have fined several people fairly heavily for breaking the laws on littering, and if I can do the same thing with spitting, I will.”
