Mayor wishes museum happy birthday

Doncaster Mayor Peter Davies cuts a special cake at Doncaster Museum yesterday with the help of Andrea Marshall, of the Friends of Doncaster Museums.

The cake-cutting formed part of a birthday celebration held to mark the centenary of the museum.

Yesterday marked exactly 100 years since the museum, then based in Beechfield House, was opened by the Viscountess of Halifax. The museum moved to its current home, in Chequer Road, in 1964. Visitors were given free refreshments after Mr davies cut the birthday cake. He said: "I am delighted to be sharing the museum's 100th birthday with staff and visitors.

"We should be proud of Doncaster's heritage and visiting the museum is a great way for people to learn about our past."

A special exhibition to mark the centenary, which features some of the highlights of Doncaster Museum's collection, has also now opened and will run until July 17.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council's Cabinet member for housing, added: "This is an amazing milestone and I would encourage everyone to go along and check out the fantastic centenary exhibition."
