MBE for Gary Speed

OUTGOING Sheffield United boss Gary Speed was awarded an MBE today for his services to the game.

He was named the new manager of Wales on Tuesday, which surprised many in football as he only took over running Sheffield United in August.

Speed played down his achievements and said he admired the efforts of Britain's military, which is recognised at every investiture ceremony.

He said: "When you come to the palace and are lining up you see people around you - people from the Armed Forces who have done an incredible job - and you just feel fortunate to be in the same company as them."

Asked about highlights from his career the former player said: "Being made captain of Wales is probably one of the biggest accolades you can get."

Speed made his league debut for Leeds in May 1989 and went on to play 840 matches and score 134 goals during a career spanning five clubs: Leeds, Everton, Newcastle, Bolton and Sheffield United.

The former player also excelled at international level. He became Wales's most-capped outfield player, playing in 85 games and scoring seven goals.

Speed finished his playing career with Sheffield United at the end of last season. He then became the club's manager before landing the job managing Wales.
