McQueen ‘in shock’ after Golden Globe

BRITISH director Steve McQueen has spoken of his surprise after his film 12 Years A Slave was crowned the best movie drama at the Golden Globes.

The film, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, saw off competition from the likes of Captain Phillips and Gravity at the ceremony, but missed out on its other six nominations. Artist and filmmaker McQueen expressed surprise when the win came at the end of the night, in Hollywood.

“I’m a little bit in shock. Roll, Jordan, roll”, he said, referencing a Gospel tune from the slavery epic.

Con-artist caper American Hustle took home best film comedy and wins for Amy Adams (best actress) and Jennifer Lawrence (supporting actress). Oscar winner Lawrence said that making an acceptance speech does not get any easier, joking: “Don’t ever do this again. It’s so scary....I don’t know why I’m so scared, I don’t know why I’m shaking so much.”

Michael Douglas was named best actor in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for his performance as the flamboyant classical pianist Liberace in Behind the Candelabra. Cate Blanchett collected the best actress in a drama award for her part as a disgraced socialite in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. Leonardo DiCaprio, meanwhile, won best actor in a comedy or musical for The Wolf of Wall Street.

And it was not just on the screen that Britain wowed at the Golden Globes. The red carpet provided a chance for leading actors and actresses to show off their style with a number championing creations from this side of the pond. The Globes, which celebrate film and TV, were hosted by Tina Fey and her co-presenter Amy Poehler, who chose to wear three custom-designed gowns by English designer Stella McCartney.

Savile Row-based tailors Spencer Hart dressed some of the biggest stars of the night in bespoke suits, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Rufus Sewell and Jason Statham.
