Medics are proud to be part of charity’s work

FROM oozing blisters to twisted ankles, over a long career Dennis Holmes has seen it all.

The 64-year-old works for Ossett-based Venture Event Medical Management, which is responsible for booking the St John’s Ambulance staff for both the Peaks Walk for All and all the other events in the Jane Tomlinson Appeal’s fund-raising calendar.

“The main thing is the planning stages, and talking to St John’s Ambulance and the mountain rescue teams”, he said.

“On a day like today though, we’ll be expecting more trips and slips than usual, plus perhaps even cases of hypothermia as it’s so cold. Having said that, though, most people seem to be in the appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions.”

Mr Holmes added: “We’ve got around 22 St John’s Ambulance staff here today, which is more than we originally booked. They went more due to the weather.

“A lot of it is blisters, twisted ankles and strained knees. Although we didn’t envisage any major accidents, it is a big area to cover, with both the 24-mile and the 12-mile walks. We’ve got staff on every route, at key locations, and we also have an ambulance at each of the checkpoints.

“Although we’re hoping not to have to use them for emergencies, they’re useful to have in the rain as they provide somewhere dry to treat people.”

Venture Event Medical Management has been associated with the Jane Tomlinson Appeal ever since it began organising these major fund-raising events.

Mr Holmes said: “Since the appeal started these events, we’ve done all their work and we’re proud to be associated with them.”
