Member crackdown at troubled club

A NEW membership scheme is to be introduced at Niche nightclub in Sheffield, which was closed down by police last month after five men were stabbed near the premises.

Officers ordered the club in Charter Row to shut following the incident in the early hours of Sunday, July 18, in which men who had been in the club attacked each other on wasteland nearby.

South Yorkshire Police are now working with owner Steve Baxendale to draw up a list of conditions under which Niche could reopen, to stop any more trouble on the premises.

The club, which is known for being the birthplace of bassline music, attracts members of Sheffield's notorious "postcode" gangs and its previous venue, in Sidney Street, was shut down following a police raid in 2005.

A decision on Niche's licence will be made at a meeting on Thursday, August 12.
