Memorial service held for organ-scandal children

A memorial service was held yesterday for the parents of children who were caught up in the Alder Hey organ scandal.

About 200 people attended the service which was followed by the dedication of a memorial garden by the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones.

It comes more than 10 years after it emerged Alder Hey Children's Hospital had stripped hundreds of dead babies of their organs without the permission of relatives.

The service, at All Souls Church in Allerton, Liverpool, was tinged with further sadness as it was announced John O'Hare, one of the leading campaigners to change the law after the scandal emerged, had been taken to hospital with a serious illness.

His planned address was read on his behalf by Canon Doctor Ian Lovett.
