Memorial service for murdered schoolteacher

PLANS HAVE been announced for a memorial service that will celebrate the life of murdered Leeds schoolteacher Ann Maguire.

The service will take place at Leeds Town Hall on Monday, September 29, starting at midday. Members of the public will be able to join invited guests to show their appreciation for mother-of-two Mrs Maguire’s long years of service at Halton Moor’s Corpus Christi Catholic College.

Monsignor John Wilson, the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Leeds, said: “The memorial service has been planned in conjunction with Mrs Maguire’s family so that there might be an opportunity for everyone who wants to honour Ann’s memory to attend.

“It is right and fitting that we pay tribute to someone who devoted her professional life to teaching young people. We want to prayerfully remember and celebrate her wonderful legacy of service to Catholic education in our Diocese and the city of Leeds.”

Coun Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Ann Maguire spent her whole career educating, nurturing and supporting generations of young people at Corpus Christi Catholic College. This public memorial service will give us all an opportunity to celebrate her life and her outstanding contribution to education in the city.” Mrs Maguire, 61, from Moortown, was fatally stabbed as she took a lesson at Corpus Christi on April 28.

She had taught at Corpus Christi for more than 40 years and was due to retire in September.

Her funeral at Moortown’s Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church was attended by hundreds of mourners. Mrs Maguire’s family has set up an educational fund in her memory. It will provide bursaries and support for the “enhancement and personal development” of young people through music, drama, language and dance. Donations to the fund can be made via www.justgiving.com/ann-maguire. Yesterday the total on the web page stood at just under £20,000.
