Memorial service tributes to police officer murdered by IRA

TRIBUTES were paid to a special constable at a memorial service to mark the 20-year anniversary since he was murdered by an IRA gunman in Yorkshire.

Glenn Goodman was gunned down on the A64 near Tadcaster in 1992 by Paul “Mad Dog” Magee, who was jailed for life but later released in 2000 under the Good Friday Agreement. Emotional tributes were paid to Mr Goodman during the service at St Mary’s Church in Tadcaster yesterday.

North Yorkshire Police’s Temporary Chief Constable Tim Madgwick said his former colleague had joined the force to “make a difference” and “his ultimate sacrifice” would never be forgotten.

Mr Goodman, 37, was shot after stopping a Ford Sierra containing two IRA terrorists on the A64 near Tadcaster on June 7, 1992. Magee was found guilty of killing Pc Goodman and given a life sentence with the recommendation he serve a minimum of 30 years. The Sierra’s driver, Michael O’Brien, was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
