Temporary Insp Steve Askham from the Roads Policing Unit said: “There has been a lot of speculation around the circumstances of this collision and I would like to address some inaccuracies, in order to ensure that the integrity of our ongoing investigation is not compromised.

“All evidence collected by the inquiry indicates that the fire was caused purely by the circumstances of the collision.

“In addition, we are aware that there continues to be speculation over who was sitting where in the car. We are currently unable to establish this information so it forms part of our ongoing investigation.

“We are actively pursuing the suggestion that another vehicle may have been involved.”

Four people have been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.
