Met chief hails courage of injured officer

Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has praised the courage of front-line officers after a traffic policeman who was yesterday fighting for his life when he was hit by a speeding car.

The constable was critically
injured when he was run over by a black Volkswagen Golf that
he had tried to stop for speeding just before 1am yesterday 
on the A217 in Sutton, south London.

Sir Bernard, who is the UK’s most senior police officer, said: “Whilst serious injuries on duty are thankfully rare, it is a reminder of the courage of our front-line staff when carrying out their role to keep London safe.”

The officer, who is in his 40s, yesterday remained in hospital in south London.
