Meteor strike blamed for plane crash alert in North Yorkshire

A METEOR strike is being blamed after fire crews were called out to reports of a plane crash in North Yorkshire this morning.

Six fire appliances went to the scene of the reported plane crash just after 12.15am at Whitley, near the M62 and close to border with West Yorkshire.

Two crews from Selby and a further two from Tadcaster were joined by two appliances from the West Yorkshire brigade on the emergency call-out.

It is thought that motorists who were driving along the motorway made the reports of the plane crash to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

However, a spokesman for the brigade confirmed that no aircraft was found, and the suspected plane crash is likely to have been mistaken for a meteor strike.
