The money for the Advanced Manufacturing and Research Centre will be promised by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg as he gives a speech calling for the major parties to work together to give UK businesses long term stability.

Mr Clegg said: “The highly skilled workers at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Sheffield are leading the charge for innovative technologies and the Government’s investment of £7 million alongside industry will help to ensure the UK continues to build and design the planes of the future.”

In his speech at the Manufacturing Summit on Merseyside, the Deputy Prime Minister will argue that British industry has suffered from shifts in policy from one Government to the next.

“To put it bluntly – we need to take the politics out of Britain’s industrial policy,” he will say.

Mr Clegg will also argue that the Regional Growth Fund, one of the Coalition’s main initiatives to support the economy outside London and the South-East, should continue beyond next year’s General Election.

The Deputy Prime Minister will reject criticism that RGF money has been too slow to reach businesses and argue it has been a “powerful stimulus” for investment.

But he will argue “we’ve still got a way to go to clear up the damage done to our long-term competitiveness.”
