Minister defends Afghanistan policy

More than 200 students from the University of Leeds have grilled Foreign Office Minister Ivan Lewis on the Government's Afghanistan policy.

They focussed on the deathtoll, whether lives had been lost in vain, the wisdom of invasion to tackle terrorism and the withdrawal of troops.

Mr Lewis said: “It was a very feisty meeting with a lot of healthy debate. I explained that if we left tomorrow al-Qaida would be back and posing a greater threat to our security here in Leeds.”
