Ministers back ban on sunbeds for under-18s

THE Government has thrown its weight behind proposals to ban under-18s from using sunbeds.

A Bill introduced by Labour backbencher Julie Morgan would also ban unmannned machines and the backing of Ministers now makes it more likely to become law.

Health Secretary Andy Burnham will tomorrow attend a parliamentary reception organised to rally support for the Bill, which will come back before MPs later this month.

Gillian Merron, Public Health Minister, said: "Cancer Research UK's recent report, commissioned by the Government, showed worrying levels of sunbed use by under-18s and confirmed that voluntary action by the industry is not enough to protect young people.

"The Government is keen to act by introducing a ban on the use of sunbeds for under-18s, and fully supports this bill."
