Minster hopes to save organ with concerts

THE curtain-raiser for a series of concerts aimed at raising £12,000 to save Howden Minster’s historic organ will be held on Easter Saturday at 1pm.

The Hallgate Camerata from Cottingham, under the directorship of Julian Savory, will be performing The Redeemer by Martin Shaw.

The piece is a little-known Easter oratorio that renowned English composer Vaughan Williams described as worthy of being sung by every parish church choir, every year.

Proceeds from the concerts and others this year will go to the campaign to save the organ, which was built in 1929 and is suffering from a serious woodworm infestation. The church has warned it may have to swap wedding fanfares for piano music if nothing is done.

Tickets, which cost £5, will be available on the day.
