Minster leads way on disabled visitors

York Minster has been named as the first recipient of a new award for its welcoming approach to disabled visitors.

It comes after a series of improvements were made at the historic building in a bid to make it more accessible following advice from young members of the Children’s Society.

The award, which is called ‘A Good Place to Come’, sees young people carry out fact finding visits to a range of locations in the city, including theatres, sports centres, colleges and cafes.

Following each visit they provide a detailed report, which includes recommendations on how to improve the experience for disabled people.

Once the locations have acted upon the recommendations they are awarded their certificate.

Dean of York Keith Jones said: “The Minster welcomes thousands of visitors a year from around the globe and we aim to give every one of them a positive and memorable experience. The advice we received from the young people was invaluable in helping us enhance the experience for disabled visitors and we hope they will continue to let us know if they spot anything else that could be improved.”
