Minster protest over Sentamu’s marriage views

HUNDREDS of protesters are expected to descend on York Minster today against comments made by the Archbishop of York over gay marriage.

The protest has been organised by Cem Turhan, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) officer at York University, after Dr John Sentamu, the second most senior cleric in the Church of England, said marriage must remain a union between a man and a woman. The archbishop is currently in Jamaica and unable to comment on the protest.

A Facebook page called Protest for Marriage Quality at York Minster last night showed hundreds had confirmed to attend today’s event at 1pm.

North Yorkshire Police say they are expecting the gathering to be peaceful.
