Minster to provide grand setting for schoolgirl's song to baby cousin

AS FAR as venues go for a performance of one of your musical compositions, York Minster takes some beating.

Teenager Faye Parkes will be given the chance to perform Reed's Lullaby, in its grand confines of next month as part of the Queen Mary's School annual Music Scholars' concert.

The 16-year-old, who lives in York and is a pupil at the independent school at Baldersby Park, near Thirsk, and her fellow head chorister, Maddy Hunter, will perform the piece which she wrote for her young cousin, Reed, who will celebrate his first birthday in May.

The piece, which is part of Faye's GCSE studies, is written for two voices, the cello and harp and will be performed in the cathedral on Saturday, May 1.

The two head choristers were yesterday joined by the school's director of music, Nicholas Carter, for a rehearsal.

Mr Carter, who will conduct the concert, said: "For all the solo performers, but particularly Faye, I'm sure this will be a one-off experience which they will never forget."

Tickets are available from the cathedral's box office and cost 8 or 5 for concessions.

Proceeds from a collection will be divided between the Calm Project, in Africa, which is one of the school's chosen charities, and York Minster.
