Minster scheme reaches final phase

WORK on the final phase of a £700,000 scheme which council chiefs claim will transform the area around Rotherham Minster into a "beautiful green space" has begun.

Plans drawn up by the authority show that the project will incorporate high-quality seating, planting, better lighting and York stone paving.

The entrance steps to the Minster Yard will be extended and the stone boundary wall on Church Street will be curved round to create what officers call "a more inviting entrance".

Archaeological and preparatory work has already taken place with some trees being removed and new ones planted. A 150,000 scheme to light up the Minster at night was also unveiled last year.

The work on the Minster Yard will take place as part of the 3.5m Townscape Heritage Initiative that is improving the High Street and its surroundings, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Rotherham Borough Council and Yorkshire Forward.

Contractors working on the Minster Yard will use the former All Saints site opposite as a compound for storing materials and equipment during the six-month project.

Councillor Gerald Smith the authority's regeneration spokesman, said: "This is a vital part of the Rotherham Renaissance programme because I am sure the improvements will increase the number of people using the Minster Yard.

"The Minster is at the heart of Rotherham and in future visitors and those people who work and live in the town centre will find this a really pleasant spot to relax in.

"It will also form an attractive link from All Saints' Square to the Imperial Buildings opposite where several new shops and businesses have recently opened."

The Vicar of Rotherham, the Rev Canon David Bliss, added: "I am really looking forward to seeing the end result because I think it will really enhance the church. I hope the people of Rotherham will be pleased too and that they bear with us while the works take place."
