Minster send-off as pioneers use newly-created cycle route

The first riders to tackle a new cycle route have been given an official send-off from Beverley Minster.

The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route took the cycling pioneers west from Beverley to Market Weighton and Pocklington, as far north as Malton, across to Bridlington in the east and then back through Driffield, passing through 47 East Riding towns and villages.

The cyclists are planning to do the 146-mile route, which takes in some glorious scenery, in four days.

Chief executive of tourism organisation VHEY Janet Reuben was there along with Coun Jane Evison to see them off.

Mrs Reuben said: “The Wolds has a wealth of stunning countryside and tranquil villages, making it an ideal location for cyclists.

“This route has been created to tempt visitors to spend longer and explore further into this region as well as providing a sustainable attraction that will benefit local communities and businesses for years to come.”

The route, normally expected to take five days, uses existing and newly created parts of the National Cycle Network and has new signs installed along the way.

It is part of VHEY’s Yorkshire Wolds Development Programme: a major tourism development programme to attract more visitors to the Yorkshire Wolds.
