Minster tribute to Afghan troops

COMMANDING officers in the Army have paid tribute to their troops who were honoured during a service at York Minster after returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

A total of 60 officers and soldiers from 214 Signal Squadron, 21st Signal Regiment (Air Support), received their operational service medals yesterday from the Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, in the cathedral.

The Commanding Officer 21st Signal Regiment (Air Support), Lieutenant Colonel Graham Addley, heralded the expertise and enthusiasm shown by the soldiers, who returned to the UK last week.

He added: “They conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism and deserve the hard-earned praise they received from the senior commanders they supported. It is clear they made a real difference.”

The regiment undertook a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan supporting 3 Commando Brigade and then 20 Armoured Brigade by delivering vital communication links to the frontline.

They installed equipment that allowed military commanders to not only direct their troops but also target insurgents and support helicopter operations, including evacuating casualties.

The Commander of 11 Signal Brigade, Brigadier Jonathan Cole, added: “I’d like to congratulate each soldier... we owe a lot to them.”
