Mobile crackdown on illegal parking

parking bosses have unveiled plans for mobile enforcement cameras in a scheme which could raise more than £250,000 a year in fines.

Sheffield Council’s cabinet highways committee is set to approve the scheme at a meeting next week which would see the authority buy specially equipped vehicles.

Kevan Butt, the authority’s parking services manager, said: “Enforcement of parking contraventions using mobile cameras will enhance the effectiveness of enforcement in specific areas.

“More effective enforcement will improve safety around schools, make bus stops more accessible and reduce traffic congestion.”

The scheme will cost £124,000 to implement, which will include the bill for vehicles, IT systems, road markings, erecting warning signs and fitting the CCTV to vehicles.

Sheffield Council’s plan follows the announcement of a similar vehicle by Barnsley Council last August.

However, late last month officials admitted that the CCTV vehicle had not yet been brought into service because of “technical difficulties”.
