Model idea to mark Flying Scotsman restoration effort

MODEL-MAKERS are being given the chance to take a ride on Flying Scotsman, one of the most iconic locomotives in Britain, with a new competition launched by York’s National Railway Museum.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds has been spent on the detailed restoration of Flying Scotsman, which is to go on display at the museum’s Great Hall later this year.

And to mark the new arrival, fans of the iconic locomotive have been asked to create and send in a model of Flying Scotsman, using whatever materials they choose, with the best winning two tickets to take a ride on the engine.

The head of knowledge and collections at the National Railway Museum, Helen Ashby, said: “This competition is about giving everyone, young and old, the chance to win this once in a lifetime prize.

“We’re not necessarily looking for the most accurate model of Flying Scotsman - we’re looking for a really creative, and unique model. We don’t mind what it’s made of, be it clay, Lego, lollipop sticks or even flowers.”

The models can be a maximum of 120cm long, 60cm wide and 40cm high.

Entries need to be posted to the museum and must be accompanied by a form downloadable from www.nrm.org.uk/scotsmancomp.
