Monday night commuter chaos as police car pile-up shuts M1 in Yorkshire

DRIVERS were facing a nightmare journey home this evening after the M1 in West Yorkshire was closed southbound following an accident involving two lorries and a police car.

There was queueing traffic on the motorway southbound between Junction 39, the A636 (Durkar) and Junction 38, the A637 (Woolley), because of a serious accident involving two lorries and a car.

Diversions are in operation - leaving the M1 at Junction 39 and following signs to rejoin the M1 at Junction 38. But drivers are being asked to find alternatives routes if possible.

The M1 is also blocked northbound, with queueing traffic and long delays between junctions 38 and 39.

Police were called around 4.15pm this afternoon to reports of an accident on the motorway, involving a car, a police car and a HGV.

The woman driver of the car and a male police officer have both sustained serious injuries. The driver of the HGV has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The southbound carriageway is likely to be closed until further notice. The northbound section was closed for a time while the air ambulance landed.

Meanwhile, the M62 has a lane closed on the exit slip road at junction 39, with queueing traffic because of a broken down crane.
