Monumental history to be recounted

PREPARATIONS are underway for an event which will tell the story of some of the monuments at one of South Yorkshire’s most popular tourist attractions.

The Monument Walk will be held at Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley on Sunday, March 27.

A guide will take participants through the Grade-I listed parkland to discover the stories behind the various monuments, which include Queen Anne’s Obelisk and the Duke of Argyll’s column.

Starting at 10.30am and lasting two hours, the walk will also pause at the Rotunda to take a look at the recent restoration work.

Tickets cost £12.50 and include a two-course lunch of venison sausage with Yorkshire pudding or a vegetarian option, followed by apple crumble and custard.

After the meal there will be coffee and an informal 30 min question and answer session.

The Yorkshire Post published a story last Friday reporting that Friends of Wentworth Castle Gardens chairman Mike Mallinson was stepping down after 20 years.

In fact, Mr Mallinson is celebrating the anniversary and will be continuing with that work.
