More checks urged on foreign HGVs

NOT enough is being done to deal with potentially dangerous foreign lorries on UK roads, a report by MPs said today.

It is "unacceptable" that Government safety organisation the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa) cannot properly inspect high-risk vehicles at ports before they enter Britain, the report added.

Also, it is a "concern" that foreign lorries use UK roads and cause accidents but, unlike British lorries, do not pay any tax, said the report from the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee.

It added: "More needs to be done to address the significant risk to road safety posed by foreign commercial vehicles."
