More die as Koran threat provokes riots

A protester hurls stones at government forces in Srinagar after Indian police opened fire on Muslim demonstrators in a town near Kashmir, killing four people.

Thirty were wounded in the incident which happened as leaders of India's main political parties debated how to end protests.

The confrontations yesterday came two days after 18 protesters and a police officer were killed in street battles.

The riots were partly a response to a US pastor's threat to burn the Koran. The issue resurfaced in Srinagar when thousands of protesters clashed with police chanting "Down with Koran desecraters".
