More flexible trading hours at market

Council bosses in York have introduced more flexible trading hours at a market in the heart of the city.

Following talks with traders at Newgate Market they will have more time to load up at the end of the day to take the weather into account.

Traders are now able to load up an hour early on Sundays through to Fridays, while the access time for Saturday business remains at its usual time.

The arrangement will start on Sunday and run until Sunday February 23 next year.

Coun Sonja Crisp, York Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “We have listened carefully to what some of the traders have been telling us about their winter trading conditions... and we are now acting upon their comments and feedback although traders who wish to may still trade until 5pm each day.”

Newgate Market is just off The Shambles. For further information about York’s markets visit www.york.gov.uk/markets
