More than £3.6m to be spent on repairing road potholes

MORE than £3.6m will be spent on repairing potholes in roads in the East Riding after an extra £1m "reward" money was granted to the local authority.

The extra spending was endorsed by the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) and forms part of a performance reward grant of 6m given to the LSP by central government because the council and its partners met and exceeded targets set in the second Local Public Sector Agreement .

News of the 1m investment followed an East Riding Cabinet decision to award an extra 2.6m for highway maintenance, bringing the total extra investment to more than 3.6m.

The money will go towards repairing roads which have suffered in the past two winters, which has seen freezing conditions lead to an increase in potholes and other damage.

The leader of the council and chairman of the LSP, Steve Parnaby, said: "We understand the concerns of residents about the road network and hope that the amount of funding being committed reassures them that we will do what it takes to maintain our road network.

"While the work to restore the network is carried out there will be an increase in road works, but the long-term improvement far outweighs any temporary disruption."

The LSP board is made up of representatives including Humberside Police, NHS East Riding, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Probation Trust, Business Link Yorkshire and representatives from voluntary and community sector as well as East Riding of Yorkshire Council.More than 26 million journeys are made a year on the East Riding's 2,000-mile road network.
