More snow forecast but region set to be spared

Yorkshire is likely to avoid further snowfalls that could bring fresh travel misery to the other areas of the UK today.

Meteogroup, the weather news division of the Press Association, has forecast up to 10cms on high ground in Wales, flurries across central England and sleet in London.

Spokesman Rob Hutchinson said the worst of the new snowfalls could be severe enough to affect travel but they were expected to clear up quickly.

"At the moment it's going to be higher parts of Wales that will see the most," he said.

"Higher parts of the West Midlands and the Cotswolds could also be affected. But some milder air is pushing in on Thursday, along with outbreaks of rain."

The Government's Met Office said: "There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting parts of England and Wales on Wednesday.

"Outbreaks of rain are expected to turn increasingly to sleet or wet snow, with accumulations of 1cm to 3cms in places and, locally, 4cms to 7cms. Over southeast Wales, there is a risk of up to 10cms of snow on ground over 200ms.

"Heavy rain will spread to many areas during Thursday, particularly northern and western areas, where there will be rainfall totals of 15mms to 25mms, and, locally, 40mms to 50mms over higher ground, accompanied by strong southerly winds in places."

The forecast came as North Yorkshire County Council allocated an emergency 1 million to begin repairs of roads damaged by the thawing and freezing of the snow that brought the region to a standstill over Christmas and into the New Year.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis told yesterday's Cabinet meeting that supplies of salted grit from the US and Spain would arrive in the UK yesterday and his relaxation of lorry drivers' permitted working hours – introduced to keep supplies flowing – had been extended to cover the next seven days.
