An investigation was launched immediately into the youngster’s death and her mother, Natasha Sultan, 21, was arrested and questioned.

She was charged with murder when she answered bail at 3pm yesterday.

In a statement, Senior Crown Prosecutor Paula Craven said last night: “I have today authorised Humberside Police to charge Natasha Sultan with the murder of five-week-old Amelia-Lilly Sultan-Curtis. Ms Sultan has now been informed of the charges and will appear before Hull magistrates tomorrow morning.”

Hull Council said there had been no social care involvement with the family.
