Mother who lost son in Afghan conflict calls for war memorial

A MOTHER whose soldier son was killed in Afghanistan has launched an appeal to raise £30,000 for a war memorial in the area where he grew up.

Senior Aircraftman Christopher Bridge of Shiregreen, Sheffield, died in August 2007 when a Land Rover he was travelling in hit a roadside bomb while patrolling Kandahar Airport.

He was serving with 51 Squadron Royal Airforce Regiment, and his mother Nicolette Williams said the memorial would pay tribute to his bravery.

Mrs Williams has also enlisted the help of the family of Lance Corporal Jamie Fellows, 28, who was killed in December 2008 while serving as a Royal Marine Commando.

Nightclubs and pubs in Sheffield city centre have agreed to charge an extra £1 on entry fees this weekend, which marks St George’s Day, to help raise cash.

Mrs Williams said: “I will be visiting all the bars and clubs myself with bucket in hand hoping the people of Sheffield will show generosity.

“Every penny is well worth it for the sacrifices of the brave men who lay down their lives for our country.”

Mrs Williams said around £18,000 had already been raised for the memorial which will also include the names of 69 men from the north of Sheffield who died in the Second World War.
